Donoghue immigrated from per 1920 census to Ireland. Between 1915 and 1919 in Lawrence, Essex, Massachusetts, USA, Hannah M. Donoghue was employed as a maid.
Biography: Her father's brother had come over from Ireland a few years before. He was a plasterer and made good money and it seems each year went back to Ireland for a visit and brought back one of his nephews or nieces. Grandma's three or four sisters and a brother, Din, were already in America when Grandma came over. Grandma was born in 1897 so she was about 18 when she came over. Her uncle worked out of either Portland Maine or Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Irish girls were in big demand as maids for wealthy famillies and grandma got a job as a maid working for the Brown family who owned a Bobbin mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts. As most weathy families in those days the Brown's had a home at the ocean but I"m not sure if it was in New Hampshire or Maine.¹ In January 1920 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA, at age 25, Hannah M. Donoghue married Richard H. Shomo, age 26, son of George Ellsworth Shomo and Roxie Rovena Kizer. As of January 1920, her married name was Hannah M. Shomo (Donoghue). Hannah M.
