Biography: Per Wilhelmina Naber Kelley to her daughter Kathleen Kelley Kilcoin in 1970: When Joseph was 12 years old, he apprenticed to a shoemaker. We still have the trunk he was given. He worked in a shoe store in Leipsic, and later had a shoe repair shop in Toledo. One day when he was in his early twenties, he was walking with a friend when he saw a young blonde girl hanging up laundry. "That's the girl I'm going to marry", he said. It was Theresia Schmidt (Smith), who was working for a family. They were married in Glandorf, OH in 1885. Joseph had a small 2-story frame house built at the corner of Sugar and 7th in 1885 when he married Theresia Smith.8
