Kutatásait számos gyakorlati kérdés megoldásában érvényesítette (a fo"város vízellátása, csatornázás stb.). Az o" javaslatai alapján léptették életbe az iskolaorvosi egészségtan-tanári intézményt. Markusovszky Lajossal megszervezte az Országos Közegészségi Egyesületet. 1879– 87-ben a Természettudományi Közlöny, 1887-tól az Egészség c. lap szerk.-je, a Természettudományi Társulat fo"titkára éveken át. Világviszonylatban elso"nek vetette fel egy országos közegészségügyi intézet és területi közegészségügyi-járványügyi intézet tervét. Több munkájában élesen bírálta a hazai társadalmi viszonyokat és azok egészségromboló hatását. Az Orvos-Egészségügyi Dolgozók Szakszervezete az 1960-ban felújított Fodor József emlékéremmel a közegészség- és járványügy terén kifejtett tudományos munkát jutalmazza évenként. Számos tanulmánya jelent meg az, Orvosi Hetilap Közegészségügy és Törvényszéki Orvostan c. mellékletében, az Egészség c. lapban és külföldi folyóiratokban. Fodor József (Lakócsa, 1843. júl. 16. – Bp., 1901. márc. 20.): higiénikus, egyetemi tanár, az MTA tagja (l. 1878, r. 1883), a Cambridge-i egyetem tiszteletbeli doktora. Bécsben és Pesten tanult, 1865-ben orvosdoktor, 1866-tól tanársegéd az államorvostani tanszéken. 1869-ben kórházi boncnokfo"orvos, magántanár a tiszti orvosi eljárásokból. Külföldi tanulmányút után 1872-ben Kolozsvárott az államorvostan ny. r. tanára. 1874–1901-ben az orvosi rendészet, utóbb a közegészségtan ny. r. tanára a bp.-i egy.-en. 1894–95-ben az egy. rektora. A közegészségtannak nemcsak elso" hazai oktatója és mu"velje, de nemzetközi viszonylatban is egyik megalapozója. A levego", a talaj és a víz szennyezo"désére vonatkozó kutatásai mind módszereik, mind megállapításaik tekintetében klasszikus jelento"ségu"ek és hozzájárultak Pettenkofer téves talajelméletének megdöntéséhez. Elso"k között mutatta ki a víz tífuszt terjeszto" szerepét. Jelento"sek a szénmonoxid toxicitására vonatkozó kutatásai. Felismerte a bakteriológia fontosságát. Kutatásait számos gyakorlati kérdés megoldásában érvényesítette (a fo"város vízellátása, csatornázás stb.). Az o" javaslatai alapján léptették életbe az iskolaorvosi egészségtan-tanári intézményt. Markusovszky Lajossal megszervezte az Országos Közegészségi Egyesületet. 1879– 87-ben a Természettudományi Közlöny, 1887-tól az Egészség c. lap szerk.-je, a Természettudományi Társulat fo"titkára éveken át. Világviszonylatban elso"nek vetette fel egy országos közegészségügyi intézet és területi közegészségügyi-járványügyi intézet tervét. Több munkájában élesen bírálta a hazai társadalmi viszonyokat és azok egészségromboló hatását. Az Orvos-Egészségügyi Dolgozók Szakszervezete az 1960-ban felújított Fodor József emlékéremmel a közegészség- és járványügy terén kifejtett tudományos munkát jutalmazza évenként. Számos tanulmánya jelent meg az, Orvosi Hetilap Közegészségügy és Törvényszéki Orvostan c. mellékletében, az Egészség c. lapban és külföldi folyóiratokban. Dr József Fodor died on 20 March 1901 in Budapest, Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kis-Kun, Hungary at age 57.1
