Volunteer in Austro-Hungarian military in Graz in WWI. He was on the Serbian front and later on the Russian front. He was a captain in the reserves. In the winter of 1915, he became a POW on the Russian front. He was a POW for six years in Siberia at Krasnoyarsk. At the POW camp, he became the camp administrator. Although escaping prisoners were routinely shot, he escaped with 12 others and made his way over three months through Russia. Russia was undergoing their revolution at that time. He was captured many times by the Reds or Whites and several times was scheduled to be executed. When he finally made it back to Hungary his parents did not recognize him. Only 2 of the 13 escapees made it to Hungary. Since Serbia occupied Pecs until 1921, he stayed in Budapest. After leaving the army, he began a logging business and had three lumber mills around the country. He was an excellent businessman. He had mining interests. Later he became associated with the Danube Steamship Company and became their primary representative in Pecs. He provided coal to them.

Eventually he remarried and opened a pharmacy in Kaposvar.¹
